Penetration in Application | BLT Provided Support for BLT’s “Light” Racecar

2017.11.11

The 2017 Formula Student China (FSC) and the 2017  NIO Cup Formula Student Electric China was held in Xiangyang, Hubei, China during November 11-18th. In this event, Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) Racing sponsored by BLT won the second prize of Cost and Manufacturing Analysis and the Best Electric System and Wiring Harness Prize. BIT chose Black Shark VIII, the lightest car since FSC was held eight years ago, for racing and the breakthrough in design limit of racecars was attributed to BLT’s technical support.

BLT’s experience in lightweight design and support in metal 3D printing technology realized the innovative column design, which has ensured extremely high manufacturing accuracy and good performance in lightweight: 20% of weight cut column parts but 140% increase in intensity Black Shark VIII boasts a gross mass within 163kg, 14% lighter than the one in the last year, propelling it as the lightest among 121 participating teams in 2017 season and also the lightest one since FSC was held eight years ago.

✬Black Shark VIII (8th-Gen)

✬Gross mass: 160kg

✬Body structure: Single shell bearing type

✬Transmitter model: CRF450X

✬Engine capacity: 449cc

✬Wheelbase: 1560mm

✬Front/Rear track: 1220mm/1200mm

✬Data collection: Acceleration sensor, displacement sensor, GPS, Lambda sensor, camshaft position sensor, and corner sensor (steering wheel and crankshaft)

There is a classical saying in the aerospace sector: one gram lose in an airplane equals to thousand taels of gold. For cars, weight loss is also significant. In addition to bettering the track performance by achieving a higher power-to-weight ratio and faster response, lightweight shows superiority in fuel efficiency. According to an experiment in the Structure of Automobile authored by Chen Jiarui, for cars, 10% loss in weight leads to 6~8% increase in fuel efficiency and 100kg loss in weight reduces 0.3~0.6L of fuel consumption every hundred kilometers. Both light materials and special structures should be applied in automobile R&D. There are mainly four forms to apply 3D printing in lightweight structure design of cars: hollow mezzanine/thin-walled reinforced structure, dot matrix structure, integral structure, and heterosexual topological optimization structure.

Black Shark VIII has adopted new front and rear columns and topological optimization results, and applied curve modeling technology to bionics design.

Founded in 2011, BIT Racing is a science and technology innovation team composed of undergraduates and enjoys sole proprietary intellectual property rights on racecars they design and manufacture. In 2016, BIT Racing Studio won the first Special Innovation and Entrepreneurship Scholarship of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Taking NWPU research projects as the springboard, BLT has grown into Chinas largest metal 3D one-stop solution provider. Being concerned about the research projects in universities and innovation and entrepreneurship, BLT has always maintained its original intention. BLT looks forward to deeper cooperation and exchanges with more domestic and foreign universities and professional colleges to integrate production, learning, research, and use of 3D printing technology.
